Ko Ranginui te Atua Mātua
Ko Papatūānuku te Atua Whaea
Ka puta te ira tangata
Ki te whaiao
Ki te Ao marama
Haumi e, hui e, Tāiki e!

Our pūrakau (stories) have a primary purpose to impact positively in our daily lives. They are not merely stories. When I think of Papatūānuku and Ranginui, I think of the deep love, that eternal love, the deep respect they hold for each other. However, for that love to grow more so, was to allow their offspring to grow, have their own experiences, make mistakes, serve, etc. Having children come in to the world of light comes at great cost, but a cost that allows us to see the world more richly and helps us want to draw closer to each other and our children. For me, when we are disrespectful to our partners / spouses / significant other, or are disrespectful to our children, nieces / nephews, mokos, etc, we demonstrate immense ingratitude and immense disrespect to Papatūānuku and Ranginui, and all they fought for was in vain - we are the cause of their pain of being separated - we cut deep in to Papa and the tears from Rangi fall more and more.

This extends to all peoples. Papa and Rangi gave birth to all of us – ka puta te iri tangata! When we make egg-like statements about a group of peoples, or individuals, even though you don’t think so, you are making that statement about yourself. Whenever you think your way is more superior to the point that people should do exactly as you, or look like you, you are making the world worse off, you have serious issues. Embrace differences. Respect differences. You don't have to agree with everyone, just respect them. If we were all the same, then the world would be much poorer. It is cool when people are better than me, because it gives me a light and a license, that I can be better too, and try more to reach my potential. This does not hold for a I-am-better-than-you-so-you-really-suck relationship. Again, this is a reflection of the unhealthy relationship you have with yourself, so stop looking to blame external sources - look at yourself and make a change (thanks Michael J for that).

Heoi āno, every decision you make, the big ones and the micro ones, has a ripple effect (affect, I never know which is the right one to use), and you have no control over how those ripples are going to impact you, your whānau, your community, nation and the earth - so tread carefully upon Papa and within the realm of Rangi - Tīhei mauri ora!
